Why does my front-load washer smell, and how do I fix it?

By Nazrul Islam. Updated October 11, 2026.

Short answer: Front-load washers smell when moisture and detergent residue sit in the door gasket, drum, dispenser, and drain pump filter. Fix it by cleaning the gasket and pump filter, running the tub-clean cycle about once a month (Samsung says every 30-40 loads), using only HE detergent at the right dose, removing wet laundry promptly, and leaving the door open.

Why do front-load washers smell?

A front loader’s door seal closes tightly, which can trap moisture. Samsung says the detergent drawer, tub, and rubber door seal are all “good at trapping moisture.” Add leftover detergent or softener, and you get a musty smell.

The usual causes:

Cause What the manufacturer says
Door kept closed Whirlpool: leave the door open between loads
Wet laundry left in the drum Whirlpool: it “can lead to mildew”; Samsung: remove clothes as soon as possible
Too much or non-HE detergent Samsung: non-HE detergent causes “excessive buildup”; Whirlpool: excess causes poor rinsing
Fabric softener Samsung: it also causes buildup
Dirty pump filter Samsung: a dirty pump filter “will cause odors”
Skipped cleaning cycle Whirlpool, LG, Samsung: run a tub-clean cycle about monthly
Washer not level or drain hose too deep Samsung: an unlevel washer lets residue build up; a drain hose pushed more than 6 inches into the standpipe can cause mold and bacteria

How do I clean the door gasket?

LG gives these steps:

  1. Remove any objects from the groove at the bottom (six o’clock) of the gasket.
  2. Mix 3/4 cup (177 ml) of liquid chlorine bleach into 1 gallon (3.8 L) of warm or hot water. White vinegar can replace the bleach.
  3. Wipe the gasket with a cloth and the solution.
  4. Pull back the lip and clean underneath it.

LG warns against straight, undiluted bleach because it can wear out the gasket.

Safety: Never mix bleach and vinegar. LG says to never use the two together. Mixing bleach with acids can release chlorine gas. Wear gloves and keep the room ventilated.

How do I clean the drain pump filter?

LG includes the pump filter in its monthly routine for front loaders. Samsung says to clean it regularly. Steps from LG:

  1. Turn off and unplug the washer.
  2. Open the service panel at the bottom left.
  3. Unclip the small drain hose and drain the water into a shallow pan. Keep towels nearby.
  4. Twist the filter counterclockwise to remove it.
  5. Clean it with a soft brush and warm water. Clean the opening too.
  6. Reattach the hose and tighten the filter until it stops.

LG says not to put the filter in the dishwasher. Filter location varies by brand, so check your manual. A similar routine applies to dishwasher filters.

How often should I run the tub-clean cycle?

Whirlpool says to run Clean Washer every month. Samsung says about once a month or every 30-40 loads. Samsung notes a front-load cycle can take up to four hours.

Use a washer cleaner or liquid chlorine bleach, per your brand. Whirlpool says not to use thickened, easy-pour, or no-splash bleach. Always run the cycle with the drum empty.

Already smells? LG suggests running Tub Clean once a week for 3 weeks in a row. If the odor stays, it recommends service.

Which detergent should I use, and how much?

Use only HE (high-efficiency) detergent. Both Whirlpool and Samsung say this. Do not fill past the dispenser’s MAX line.

Samsung suggests powder detergent builds up less than liquid. It also suggests skipping fabric softener. To check for residue, Samsung says to run an empty cycle with no additives. If suds appear, repeat until they stop.

How do I keep the smell from coming back?

Humid laundry rooms add to the problem. Our guide on bathroom ceiling mold covers moisture control.

Quick answers

Can I use vinegar to clean a front-load washer? LG allows vinegar in place of bleach for wiping the gasket. Never use vinegar and bleach together.

How often should I clean my front-load washer? About once a month. Samsung says once a month or every 30-40 loads.

Should I leave the washer door open? Yes. Whirlpool recommends leaving it open between loads so the drum dries.

Why does my washer smell even after cleaning? Check the pump filter, dispenser drawer, and detergent dose. LG suggests three weekly tub cleans, then service if it persists.

Does fabric softener cause washer smell? Samsung says it causes buildup and suggests dryer sheets in the dryer or a little distilled white vinegar in the washer instead. Never add vinegar to a cycle that uses bleach.
