How to get rid of mold on a bathroom ceiling

By Nazrul Islam. Updated October 11, 2026.

Short answer: If the moldy patch is smaller than about 10 square feet, the EPA says you can usually clean it yourself. Wear an N-95 respirator, gloves and goggles, scrub with detergent and water, and dry the ceiling completely. Then fix the moisture source, run the exhaust fan, and keep indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally 30 to 50 percent.

Why does mold grow on a bathroom ceiling?

Warm shower vapor rises and condenses on the coolest surface it meets. A ceiling under a cold attic or roof is often that surface. The paint stays damp, and mold grows where moisture lingers.

The EPA’s core point is simple. If you clean up mold but don’t fix the water problem, the mold will most likely come back. So treat cleaning and moisture control as one job.

Can I clean bathroom ceiling mold myself?

The EPA uses a size guideline. An area smaller than about 10 square feet is roughly a 3 ft by 3 ft patch. Most people can handle that themselves.

Situation EPA guidance
Patch under about 10 sq ft Usually a DIY job
Larger than about 10 sq ft Follow EPA’s fuller remediation guidance or hire help
Mold after significant water damage (leak, flood) Treat as a larger job
Mold you suspect is in the HVAC system Don’t run the system; it can spread mold

A quick check of size: a 2 ft by 3 ft patch is 2 × 3 = 6 sq ft, under the guideline. A 4 ft by 3 ft patch is 12 sq ft, over it.

What protective gear do I need?

The EPA lists three items for cleaning moldy areas:

Avoid touching mold or breathing spores. Overhead scrubbing drops debris toward your face, so goggles matter more on a ceiling than a wall.

Ladder safety: Use a stable step ladder rather than a chair or the tub edge, keep it on a dry floor, and don’t overreach. Wet tub and tile floors are slippery.

How do I clean mold off a bathroom ceiling?

  1. Stop new moisture. Find and fix any leak first, such as a roof or plumbing leak above the ceiling.
  2. Gear up. Put on the N-95, gloves and goggles.
  3. Scrub with detergent and water. The EPA’s method for hard surfaces is to scrub mold off with detergent and water.
  4. Dry completely. Run the exhaust fan or open a window until the surface is fully dry.

The EPA says to dry water-damaged areas and items within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth.

Should I use bleach on bathroom mold?

The EPA does not treat bleach or other biocides as a routine part of mold cleanup. Professionals may use them in some cases, such as when people with weakened immune systems live in the home.

Safety note: If you do use chlorine bleach, never mix it with ammonia or other household cleaners. The EPA warns this can produce toxic fumes. Ventilate the room well, which matters in a small bathroom.

When does the ceiling need replacing?

Porous materials can hold mold in a way that cleaning can’t fix. The EPA says absorbent materials such as ceiling tiles may have to be thrown away if they become moldy.

As a hedged rule of thumb, if mold has soaked into drywall or the ceiling is soft or stained through, cleaning the surface may not be enough. Replace that section or call a professional.

Can I paint over mold?

No. The EPA says not to paint or caulk moldy surfaces. Clean and dry the surface first, because paint applied over mold is likely to peel.

How do I keep mold from coming back?

Moisture control is the long-term fix.

Step Target or action
Indoor humidity Below 60%, ideally 30 to 50% (EPA)
Exhaust fan Run it during showers, and for a while after
No fan or weak fan Open a window during and after showers
Wet spots Dry within 24 to 48 hours

The EPA advises running a fan or opening a window in damp areas like bathrooms. ENERGY STAR notes that ventilation fans help control moisture. How long to run the fan after a shower isn’t fixed by these sources. Running it until the mirror and walls are clear is a reasonable rule of thumb.

For seasonal targets, see ideal indoor humidity in winter. If the whole house runs damp, see what size dehumidifier you need. Hard water spots on glass are a separate problem; see how to remove hard water stains from shower glass.

Quick answers

Is black mold on a bathroom ceiling dangerous? The EPA advises avoiding mold exposure and wearing protective gear to clean it. Remove it regardless of color, and talk to a doctor if you have symptoms or a weakened immune system.

Does vinegar kill bathroom ceiling mold? The EPA sources used here don’t address vinegar. Their recommended method is detergent and water, then drying completely.

Why does mold keep coming back on my bathroom ceiling? The moisture source is still there. Improve ventilation, keep humidity below 60 percent, and check for leaks above the ceiling.

How big a mold patch can I clean myself? The EPA says areas under about 10 square feet, roughly 3 ft by 3 ft, are usually DIY.

Can I just paint over ceiling mold with mold-resistant paint? Not over existing mold. The EPA says to clean and dry first, since paint over mold is likely to peel.
