How do you clean gutters safely?

By Nazrul Islam. Updated October 11, 2026.

Short answer: Inspect the ladder, then set its base out a quarter of its working length (1 foot per 4 feet). Keep three points of contact, face the ladder, and look for power lines first. Scoop debris into a bucket, flush with a hose, and make sure downspouts discharge at least 10 feet away from the house.

How often should you clean your gutters?

NC State Extension says gutters “should be cleaned, inspected, and repaired regularly.” It recommends inspecting them yearly and after major weather events.

Homes under heavy tree cover usually need more frequent checks. Late fall, after the leaves drop, is a common time to clean. It fits well with the rest of a fall winterizing checklist.

How do you set up a ladder for gutter cleaning?

Most falls start with the ladder setup, not the scooping. OSHA’s portable ladder guidance covers the key rules.

Ladder base distance (4-to-1 rule)

Formula: base distance = working length ÷ 4.

Working length (to the support point) Base distance from wall
12 ft 3 ft
16 ft 4 ft
20 ft 5 ft
24 ft 6 ft

Set the feet on firm, level ground. Soft soil or wet grass can let a foot sink or slide.

How should you climb and work on the ladder?

A bucket hooked to the ladder or your belt keeps your hands free. That makes three points of contact easier.

Step by step: cleaning the gutters

  1. Put on gloves. Gutter debris can hide sharp metal edges, screws, and rot.
  2. Scoop the debris. Use a gutter scoop or a small plastic trowel. Work toward the downspout end in short sections.
  3. Drop it in a bucket. A bucket or tarp below keeps the mess off beds and walkways. Wet leaves can go into compost or be mulched into the lawn.
  4. Flush with a hose. Run water from the far end toward the downspout. Watch where it pools or overflows.
  5. Check the downspouts. NC State Extension says downspouts and their elbows “should be clear of debris.” If water backs up, clear the clog from the bottom or top.

While the water runs, look for drips at seams and corners. These spots may need sealant or a repair.

Where should downspouts send water?

NC State Extension recommends carrying water to an outlet “at least 10 feet downhill and away from the house.” It does not recommend splash blocks because they release water too close to the home.

Clogged gutters and poor drainage also matter in winter. Overflow and ice at the roof edge are part of the ice dam problem.

Are gutter guards worth it?

NC State Extension says to “consider adding a guard or strainer” to help keep debris from clogging gutters. Guards still need periodic checks. Debris can sit on top or slip past.

When should you hire a pro?

Consider a professional gutter cleaner when:

These are judgment calls, not official cutoffs. When in doubt, the cost of a service call is small next to a fall.

Quick answers

How far should a ladder be from the wall? One foot out for every 4 feet of working length. A 16-foot working length puts the base 4 feet out.

How high above the gutter should the ladder go? If you will step onto the roof, OSHA says at least 3 feet above the point of support. Either way, never stand on the top three rungs of an extension ladder.

How often should gutters be cleaned? NC State Extension suggests inspecting at least yearly and after major storms. Heavy tree cover may require more frequent cleaning.

Can I use a metal ladder to clean gutters? OSHA advises avoiding metal ladders near power lines or energized electrical equipment. Look for overhead lines before you raise any ladder.

How far should downspouts drain from the house? NC State Extension recommends at least 10 feet downhill and away from the house.
