Should you rake leaves or mulch them into the lawn?

By Nazrul Islam. Updated October 11, 2026.

Short answer: Mulch them in most cases. Mow while you can still see grass through the leaves, with the mower set at about 3 to 4 inches. Michigan State trials, as summarized by Kansas State, shredded up to about 6 inches of leaves into turf for five years with no long-term harm. Rake or bag thick, wet, matted layers, and never push leaves into the street.

Is it OK to mow leaves into the lawn?

Yes, for most lawns. Several university turf studies tested shredding leaves into grass with a rotary mower.

Study (as summarized by Missouri/K-State) Leaf amount Result
Michigan State, Kentucky bluegrass Up to about 1 lb per sq yd (about 6 inches of leaves) No long-term effect on turf quality, thatch, or soil tests over 5 years
Michigan State, leaf-rate and soil studies 0, 3, and 6 inches Soil organic matter rose; soil pH did not change
Purdue, perennial ryegrass 0, 2,000, or 4,000 lb/acre of shredded maple leaves No effect on turf quality, color, thatch, or soil pH over 4 years; positive results as long as some nitrogen was added
Michigan State, low-input lawn 6, 12, and 18 inches, no nitrogen Over 3 years, leaves softened the surface; spring green-up was faster at higher rates

For scale, 1 lb per square yard equals 4,840 lb per acre (an acre is 4,840 sq yd). The Missouri summary notes a typical woodlot drops about 3,000 lb per acre per year.

How deep can leaves be before you rake instead?

Use the grass as your gauge. Kansas State advises: “Mow while you can still see grass peeking through the leaves.” Missouri’s guidance adds that more than 3 to 4 inches of leaves is probably too much for one mowing.

Practical rules:

Why mulching leaves helps the lawn

If you mulch heavy leaf loads, keep your normal fall nitrogen feeding. The Purdue results were positive “as long as some nitrogen was added.”

When raking or removal is the better choice

Leaves block sunlight. Kansas State notes that grass covered for a long time cannot make the carbohydrates it needs to survive winter. Rake, blow, or bag when:

A middle path works well. Mulch most of the lawn, and rake only the deep drifts along fences and beds.

Use extra leaves in beds and compost

Leaves you remove do not have to leave the property. Kansas State recommends composting them for use in vegetable gardens and flowerbeds. Shredded leaves also make a free mulch layer over garden beds. Shredding first helps them break down and keeps them from matting. For bin options that fit a small lot, see our guide on composting in a small yard.

Do not blow leaves into the street

Leaves in gutters wash into storm drains. In many cities, storm drains carry runoff to lakes and streams. As leaves soak in gutters, they can add phosphorus to that runoff.

A USGS study comparing two residential catchments in Madison, Wisconsin measured this directly:

Measure (USGS, Madison, WI) Without leaf removal With leaf removal
Share of annual total phosphorus from fall leaf litter (winter excluded) 56% 16%
Reduction in fall phosphorus load — 84% total, 83% dissolved

USGS calls these best-case results, since the study’s leaf removal went beyond what most city programs can do. Even so, the lesson is clear. Keep leaves on your lawn or in your compost, not at the curb, unless your city collects them there.

Quick answers

Will mulched leaves kill my grass? Not if grass still shows through after mowing. Thick, wet mats left for days can smother it.

How often should I mulch-mow leaves? About weekly during peak leaf drop. Frequent mowing keeps layers thin enough to shred.

Do oak leaves acidify the lawn? Probably not much. Michigan State found soil pH did not change after mulching mixed tree leaves into turf, as summarized by Missouri.

Do I need a special mulching mower? No. A mulching mower generally shreds best, but a regular side-discharge mower can also work, often with an extra pass.

Should I fertilize after mulching leaves? Generally, keep your usual fall nitrogen for cool-season lawns. Purdue’s results were positive as long as some nitrogen was added.
