Wired vs. wireless security cameras: which should you choose?

By Nazrul Islam. Updated October 11, 2026.

Short answer: Choose wired PoE cameras if you want nonstop recording and no charging, since one Ethernet cable carries both power and data (up to 100 meters under 802.3af). Choose battery Wi-Fi cameras for easy, no-drill installs. Their battery life depends on how much activity they record and drops in cold weather.

What is the difference between wired and wireless security cameras?

“Wireless” usually means two different things. It can mean the video travels over Wi-Fi. It can also mean the camera runs on a battery. Many “wireless” cameras still plug into an outlet.

A wired camera usually means a Power over Ethernet (PoE) camera. Reolink describes PoE as a system that “delivers both electrical power and data over a single standard Ethernet cable.” One cable runs from the camera to a PoE switch or recorder (NVR). There is no separate power adapter at the camera.

Wired vs. wireless cameras compared

Factor Wired PoE camera Plug-in Wi-Fi camera Battery Wi-Fi camera
Power Ethernet cable (PoE) Wall outlet Rechargeable battery
Video link Ethernet cable Wi-Fi Wi-Fi
Install effort Highest (run cable) Medium (needs an outlet) Lowest
Continuous 24/7 recording Commonly supported Often supported Usually event clips only
Recharging None None Yes, on a schedule set by use
Depends on Wi-Fi signal No Yes Yes
Typical storage Local NVR or card Cloud or card Cloud or card

Feature support varies by model. Check the spec sheet before you buy.

How far can a PoE camera be from the recorder?

Reolink’s PoE guide states that “802.3af supports 100 meters” (about 328 feet). That matches the standard 100-meter limit for an Ethernet cable run between the camera and the PoE switch or NVR. Longer runs need extra equipment, such as a PoE extender.

How long does a security camera battery last?

There is no single number. Google says Nest battery life depends on “how much activity is recorded and your settings in the app.” It also notes that “as the temperature gets colder, the battery life gets shorter.” Shorter maximum clip lengths in the app can stretch the battery.

A camera facing a busy street records more events than one facing a quiet backyard, so it needs charging more often. Treat advertised battery life as a best case.

Google also says you can connect a Nest Cam (battery) to a power outlet “so it doesn’t need to use the battery.” Other brands may offer wired or solar charging; check the model.

Do wireless cameras need good Wi-Fi?

Yes. A weak signal at the far end of a yard can cause dropped clips or slow live view. Check signal strength at the mounting spot before drilling. Our guides on where to place a Wi-Fi router and mesh Wi-Fi vs. an extender can help.

Wired PoE cameras avoid this problem. Their video travels over the same Ethernet cable that powers them.

Local storage vs. cloud subscriptions

PoE systems often record to a hard drive in an NVR. Many Wi-Fi cameras record to a microSD card, a home base station, or the maker’s cloud. Cloud plans often unlock saved video history; prices change, so check current plans.

To size a hard drive or card, see how much storage a security camera needs.

How do I keep a security camera secure?

The FTC gives these steps for internet-connected devices:

Safety notes for installing wired cameras

PoE runs at low voltage, but drilling through walls is still a hazard. Check for hidden wiring and pipes before drilling, and turn off the circuit if you’re working near electrical cables. Use outdoor-rated cable and weatherproof connections outside. For work near overhead power lines or roof edges, hire a pro. Plug-in cameras outdoors should use a GFCI-protected outlet; see why a GFCI outlet won’t reset if one trips.

Quick answers

Are wired security cameras better than wireless? Wired PoE cameras suit 24/7 recording and avoid charging and Wi-Fi dropouts. Battery cameras win on easy installation and placement flexibility.

Do wireless security cameras work without Wi-Fi? Most Wi-Fi cameras need a network to reach your phone or the cloud. Some can still record to a local card, depending on the model.

How long is a PoE cable allowed to be? Reolink states 802.3af supports 100 meters, about 328 feet, from camera to switch or NVR.

Why does my camera battery drain so fast? More recorded activity and longer clips use more power. Google also notes batteries last less in cold weather.

Do I need a subscription for a security camera? Not always. Many cameras record locally to a card or NVR. Cloud plans add features, so compare current plans before buying.
