Why are my solar lights not working?

By Nazrul Islam. Updated October 11, 2026.

Short answer: Check that the battery pull tab is removed and the switch is ON. Clean the panel and move the light into full sun; one maker asks for at least 8 hours a day. Move it away from porch or street lights. If it still fails, replace the rechargeable battery with the same chemistry and rating.

Why won’t my new solar lights turn on?

Start with the two things that stop brand-new lights.

1. Remove the pull tab. Many lights ship with a plastic tab between the battery and its contact. The Hampton Bay and Home Depot post cap guides both say to open the battery compartment and confirm the tab is fully removed. A torn scrap left behind still blocks the connection.

2. Turn the switch to ON. Some lights have a switch, often under the solar panel or on the bottom. The esotec manual says to set it to ON, after which the light turns on at dusk and off at dawn. Other models, like the post cap, have no switch at all. On those, the light sensor (photocell) does the switching.

Quick test: cover the panel with your hand. If the light comes on, the circuit works and the problem is likely charging.

Why do my solar lights only stay on for a short time?

3. Clean the panel. Both Home Depot-listed guides say a clean panel is needed for full charging. Dust, pollen, bird droppings, and hard-water film all cut the light reaching the cells. The guides do not give a cleaning method. A soft damp cloth is a sensible choice; abrasive pads can scratch the cover.

4. Give it more direct sun. The post cap guide asks for at least 8 hours of sunlight per day. The Hampton Bay guide says not to install it in a shaded area. After cloudy weather, both say it should recharge on the next sunny day.

In winter, shorter days and a lower sun mean less charge, and a June-sunny spot may be shaded in December. The esotec manual suggests charging the battery in a standard charger after long sunless stretches.

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Never turns on Pull tab in place, switch off Remove tab, switch ON
Turns on when panel covered, not at night Nearby light fooling sensor Move fixture
Runs 1-2 hours only Dirty panel, shade, weak battery Clean, relocate, replace battery
Worked for years, now dim Battery near end of life Replace battery
Flickers or dead after rain Moisture or corrosion (rule of thumb) Dry, clean contacts

Why do my solar lights stay off at night?

5. Move it away from other lights. The photocell reads ambient light. A porch light, streetlight, or security floodlight can make it think it is still daytime. The Hampton Bay guide lists other light sources as a cause of the light switching off; move the fixture or block the other light.

When should I replace solar light batteries?

6. Replace the rechargeable battery. Batteries wear out. The esotec manual suggests replacing its battery about every 2 years. Hampton Bay lists “battery near end of life” as a cause of short run times.

Match what came in the light. These three products used three different chemistries:

Product Battery that shipped
Hampton Bay fixture AA-size 3.2V 600 mAh IFR14500 (lithium iron phosphate)
Home Depot post cap 600 mAh Ni-Cd
esotec Jasmin AA 1.2V 500 mAh NiMH

The rules from the manuals:

A 3.2V lithium cell and a 1.2V NiMH cell can be the same physical AA size. They are not interchangeable. Check the label on the old battery before buying.

How do I fix corrosion or water inside a solar light?

7. Clean corroded contacts. None of the manuals we read covers corrosion. As a general rule of thumb, white or green crust on the springs blocks current. Remove the battery and scrub the contacts gently with a pencil eraser or fine abrasive. Dry fully before reinstalling.

8. Dry out water inside. The esotec light is rated IP44, so normal rain should not harm it. Cheaper lights may have weaker seals. If you see condensation, open the housing, let it dry indoors, and check the gasket. Replace a light whose circuit board is visibly corroded.

For winter, esotec suggests switching the light off, charging it, and storing it indoors. Remove the battery for long storage to prevent leakage. Our patio furniture storage guide covers other outdoor gear.

Quick answers

Can I use regular AA batteries in solar lights? No. The manuals say to use rechargeable batteries only. Alkaline cells are not meant to be recharged.

How many hours of sun do solar lights need? One manufacturer asks for at least 8 hours of direct sun a day. Shade cuts run time.

Why do solar lights stop working in winter? Shorter days and a low sun mean less charge. Run times drop, and lights may need a sunnier spot.

How long do solar light batteries last? One maker suggests replacing its NiMH battery about every 2 years. Life varies by chemistry and climate.

Why won’t my solar light come on at night? A porch light or streetlight may be fooling its light sensor. Move the fixture to a darker spot.
