How long will a generator run on a tank of gas?
Short answer: It depends on tank size and load. Honda's published specs show 8.1 hours (EU2200i, 0.95 gal), 8.6 hours (EU3200i, 1.2 gal) and 16 hours (EU7000is, 5.1 gal) per tank at 25% load. At full rated load, the same tanks last only about 3.2 to 6.4 hours.
How long does a generator run per tank? Real spec sheets
Manufacturers publish run time per tankful at set loads. Here are three Honda inverter generators, straight from Honda’s spec pages.
| Model | Rated / max watts | Tank (gal) | Run time @ 25% load | Run time @ rated load | Fuel use @ 25% (gal/hr) | Fuel use @ rated (gal/hr) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Honda EU2200i | 1,800 / 2,200 | 0.95 | 8.1 h | 3.2 h | 0.12 | 0.30 |
| Honda EU3200i | 2,600 / 3,200 | 1.2 | 8.6 h | 3.3 h | 0.14 | 0.36 |
| Honda EU7000is | 5,500 / 7,000 | 5.1 | 16.0 h | 6.4 h | 0.32 | 0.80 |
The fuel-use columns are our arithmetic:
Fuel use (gal/hr) = tank size (gal) ÷ run time (hours)
Example: 0.95 gal ÷ 8.1 h = 0.117 gal/hr for the EU2200i at 25% load.
Other brands’ numbers will differ. Check the spec sheet for the exact model you own or plan to buy.
Why does run time drop so fast as load rises?
A generator’s engine turns fuel into mechanical work, and the alternator turns that into electricity. More watts out means more fuel in. That is basic energy conservation.
But fuel use does not scale one-to-one with load. On the Honda sheets, going from 25% to 100% load is four times the power. Run time only drops by about 2.5 times:
| Model | 25% run time ÷ rated run time |
|---|---|
| EU2200i | 8.1 ÷ 3.2 = 2.5 |
| EU3200i | 8.6 ÷ 3.3 = 2.6 |
| EU7000is | 16.0 ÷ 6.4 = 2.5 |
So a lightly loaded generator still burns a noticeable amount of fuel just to keep running. Running a big generator for one small load wastes gas.
Why do spec sheets quote run time at 25% load?
A 25% figure is the longest run time on the sheet. In our reading it roughly matches light use, such as a refrigerator, a few lights and phone chargers on a mid-size unit.
Treat it as a best case. If you plan to run a sump pump, a window AC or a space heater, plan around the rated-load figure instead. To match generator size to your actual loads, see what size generator do I need.
How much gas do I need for a 24-hour outage?
Multiply hourly fuel use by hours of running.
Gallons needed = gal/hr × hours
| Model and load | Gal/hr | 24 hours | 3 days (72 h) |
|---|---|---|---|
| EU2200i @ 25% | 0.117 | 2.8 gal | 8.4 gal |
| EU3200i @ 25% | 0.140 | 3.3 gal | 10.0 gal |
| EU7000is @ 25% | 0.319 | 7.6 gal | 22.9 gal |
| EU7000is @ rated | 0.797 | 19.1 gal | 57.4 gal |
Running the generator in shifts, such as a few hours to cool the fridge then off, cuts these totals. Real fuel use also varies with temperature, altitude, engine condition and how steady the load is.
Does propane run longer than gasoline?
It depends on the model and the propane tank size. Dual-fuel generators typically list separate run times and wattages for each fuel. We could not verify comparable numbers across brands, so check the propane line on your model’s spec sheet before you plan around it.
How should I store gas for a generator?
Gasoline is a fire hazard and degrades in storage. Use approved containers, store them away from the house and living areas, and rotate the fuel. Our guide on how to store gasoline safely covers containers, stabilizer and shelf life.
Is it safe to refuel a running generator?
No. Honda’s generator operation guidance says to “refuel when the engine is off,” and “if the engine has been running, allow it to cool before refueling.” It also says not to overfill and to wipe up spilled fuel before restarting. Gasoline spilled on a hot engine or muffler can ignite. Follow your own model’s owner’s manual.
Where should a generator run? CO safety
Generator exhaust contains carbon monoxide, an odorless gas. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says:
- Run it outdoors, at least 20 feet from the house.
- Point the exhaust away from the home and other buildings.
- Never use it inside a home or garage, even if doors and windows are open.
Install battery-powered or battery-backup CO alarms inside the home. See our guide to carbon monoxide detector placement.
If fuel, noise or CO worry you, a battery power station is an option for small loads. Compare the trade-offs in power station vs generator.
Quick answers
How long will a generator run on 1 gallon of gas? From Honda’s specs, about 8.5 hours for the EU2200i at 25% load (8.1 h ÷ 0.95 gal). At rated load it is closer to 3.4 hours per gallon.
How long can a generator run continuously? Run time per tank is set by tank size and load. Beyond that, follow the manual’s guidance on breaks, oil checks and refueling.
Does a bigger generator use more gas? Usually, yes. The EU7000is burns about 0.32 gal/hr at 25% load versus 0.12 gal/hr for the EU2200i.
How much gas should I keep for an outage? Use gal/hr × hours. For a small inverter at light load, about 3 gallons covers 24 hours of running.
Can I run a generator in my garage with the door open? No. CPSC says never use a generator inside a home or garage, even with doors and windows open. Keep it at least 20 feet from the house.
